Race The Lake of the Sky – Lakeview Commons, South Lake Tahoe, California. This year over 300 paddlers came to Lake Tahoe for a weekend of paddle boarding and fun!
Tahoe Production House was asked to bring the race to the web in a Live Webcast that played on www.racethelakeofthesky.com and a few other sponsoring websites. From there, the internet audience could experience the race and see exactly what was happening at all times! This two-day event featured a variety of competitions for Standup Paddlers of all ages and abilities. There were Relay Races, Standup Paddle Cross, a Five Mile Race, and the big event, a Fourteen Mile round trip paddle to Emerald Bay and back to Lakeview Commons.
Covering the race “live” presented quite a daunting task for Tahoe Production House, as we not only needed to cover the events close to shore, where our cameras were placed to cover the action, but also with cameras several hundred to thousands of feet out in the lake for many events. For the Emerald Bay Race, we needed to have live camera coverage seven miles from our mobile control room.
How were we able to get camera signals from Emerald Bay back to our control room? We used several different bonded cellular systems up-loading the video from the camera onto cellular data modems that transmit the signal to an internet server and then back via WiFi to the control room at Lakeview Commons. Simple, right.
